A classical tropical island on Krabi’s coastline
Poda Island can be seen clearly from the beaches around Ao Nang, its limestone centre rising high above the sea.
The Beach
The North side of the island facing the Krabi mainland is covered with fine white coral sand forming a broad u-shaped beach gently sloping in to the warm waters.
The centre of the ‘U’, between the beaches, is a wide flat area covered by casuarina pine trees where you can take shade from the hot midday sun.
Poda Island is part of the Noppharat Thara Beach – Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park and is cared for by Park Rangers who have a station and accommodation on the island.
There is a small kiosk where you can buy refreshments and there’s toilet facilities too.
The beaches are kept clean and it is safe for swimming all around.
From the beaches you can look back at the coastline and see the limestone cliffs backing Phra Nang Beach, Railay, Ao Nang and Noppharat Thara Beach.
Environment & Wildlife
The centre of the island is a great limestone krast. Mostly covered by vegetation. There are many birds and animals living undisturbed up on the cliff sides. You might hear and then see the large Asian Hornbill birds flying between trees. At dusk you may see dozens of great fruit bats leaving their daytime roosts and heading to the mainland to look for food during the nighttime.
There are also monkeys which sometimes come down to the beaches. These are crab eating macaques, they are fun to look at in the trees. They are likely to be in family groups and there’s often young ones around. As with all wild animals only look, do not interfere with them or offer them food. They can get scared and act unpredictably, which can result in injury.
